Team Lead, Software Development Engineering (Communications Platform)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States; flexible hybrid model with possible in-person interviews for positions based in the Boston office.

Annual base salary: $154,000–$193,000 USD, plus potential discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units.

What you will do

• Lead a small distributed engineering team of direct hires and contractors while contributing to architecture decisions and the codebase.
• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs powering email, push notification, and SMS communication services.
• Build self-service tools that enable product teams to launch messaging campaigns and manage integrations with third-party platforms such as Iterable and Twilio.
• Coach engineers, build inclusive partnerships across US-based and offshore engineering talent, and collaborate with product managers.
• Own communication-platform roadmaps, project milestones, prioritization, and execution within two-week Scrum sprints.
• Ensure message-delivery performance, system uptime, privacy compliance, and adherence to marketing regulations.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience at scale, with a strong emphasis on backend system development.
• At least 1 year of people management experience, or experience leading technical direction and project management, with a desire to transition into formal people management.
• Deep hands-on knowledge of Java, Java-based frameworks, and API design and management.
• Experience working within an AWS ecosystem and using debugging and monitoring tools such as Grafana and Honeycomb.
• Proven ability to articulate business value to downstream consumers and manage complex third-party vendor relationships.
• Experience with AI coding tools such as Claude.
• Knowledge of messaging protocols or privacy compliance.

Nice to have

• Direct experience or exposure to frontend technologies including JavaScript, React Remix, and TypeScript.
