Project Health and Safety Lead (Construction)

Location: England, United Kingdom. Initially based in the HS2 London or Birmingham office; after 12–18 months, based at the project site closest to the home location and required to visit relevant project sites. Flexible working may be considered after the initial team integration period, subject to project needs.

What you will do

• Develop strategic health and safety plans, policies, standards, and procedures for major infrastructure projects.
• Oversee compliance, performance, audits, assurance activities, and legal and insurance requirements.
• Lead safety culture, leadership, training, and improvement initiatives across employees, subcontractors, and operational managers.
• Own and support ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 accreditations.
• Monitor and interpret performance data, manage inspection and accident investigation close-outs, and produce management reports.
• Lead the HSQE team, including recruitment, coaching, mentoring, and liaison with the Project Director.

Requirements

• Successful experience as a Project Health and Safety Lead in a construction environment.
• Experience as a Project Health and Safety Lead on a large project delivery valued at £300m or more.
• Qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, such as a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, or a related discipline with appropriate proven knowledge and experience.
• Ability to communicate at all levels, deliver health and safety training, act as a team leader, and lead, develop, and mentor H&S teams and operational managers.
• Thorough knowledge of OHSAS 45001 standards and chartered membership of IOSH.
• Ability to lead accident investigations, implement best practice, and develop and implement H&S strategies and effective change management initiatives.
• Business acumen and full understanding of the commercial impact of decisions.
• Relevant knowledge and experience of operational activities in a civil engineering environment.
• Detailed technical knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, and guidance, with the ability to involve others in decisions and empower people to act while maintaining clear expectations.
