Vice President of Engineering (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California, or remote in the United States or Canada. hirify.global hires in the United States and Canada only; candidates residing outside these countries cannot be processed.

US pay range: $275,000–$320,000 USD annually. Canada pay range: $205,000–$240,000 CAD annually.

What you will do

• Lead and develop engineers, DevOps, data specialists, and the engineering manager while building a culture of ownership, quality, and sustainable on-call coverage.
• Set engineering strategy, planning, prioritization, delivery standards, and operating rhythms in line with company goals and customer outcomes.
• Keep engineering close to bank, fintech, product, revenue, client services, and implementation partners through customer calls, implementation work, and capacity decisions.
• Shape and deliver the company’s AI direction, identifying complex regulated financial workflows where AI can create trusted customer and partner-bank outcomes.
• Partner with the executive team and VP of Product, communicate technical tradeoffs in business terms, and contribute to company strategy.
• Guide architecture, reliability, incident response, SOC 2, PCI, bank partner security reviews, and security reviews for AI systems.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading engineering organizations through managers.
• Head of Engineering experience, such as VP, Head of Engineering, or a similar role, with a seat on an executive or senior leadership team.
• Strong technical foundation in backend systems, APIs, and distributed architecture, plus experience leading DevOps or infrastructure and data teams on AWS.
• Track record of building teams people want to join and stay on, and leading them through ongoing change and innovation.
• Hands-on experience leading AI adoption, including understanding where AI helps, where it does not, and how teams should change their ways of working.
• Ability to engage with a founder-CEO’s vision, challenge it with evidence, and turn it into deliverable engineering work.
• Strong cross-functional partnership skills, especially with sales and customer success, and experience using customer evidence to influence product and engineering priorities.
• Experience in a regulated or security-sensitive industry such as fintech, payments, or banking.
• Comfort working in a small, fast-moving company where leaders are both strategic and hands-on.

Nice to have

• Banking as a Service, core banking, payments, or ledger experience.
• Clojure or another functional programming language.
• Experience leading engineering at a B2B company with fewer than 100 people through business scaling challenges.
• Experience building or running a security program.
• Experience shipping LLM-based or agentic products.
