Director of Intermodal

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; hybrid schedule.

Target base salary: $131,000–$152,000 in Illinois.

What you will do

• Set the strategic direction and oversee execution across multiple intermodal operational teams and customer accounts.
• Drive measurable cost savings, cost containment, margin improvement, ROI, and operational efficiency.
• Own customer service goals, business reviews, customer-facing meetings, and application of customer contracts.
• Standardize onboarding processes, systems applications, SOPs, and account governance with stakeholders.
• Identify bottlenecks and implement improvements across processes, cost, service, profitability, and non-committed freight awards.
• Hire, develop, retain, mentor, and manage team performance while partnering with commercial, client engagement, carrier, and leadership stakeholders.

Requirements

• 8–10+ years of dedicated experience in intermodal transportation, focused on rail freight and logistics operations.
• 5+ years of managerial experience leading, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams.
• Strong customer-facing experience establishing, monitoring, and optimizing SOPs and KPIs for service excellence.
• Experience leading and executing strategic initiatives that align operational performance with business growth goals.
• Experience leading teams through system migrations and technology enhancements that improve efficiency.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
• 5+ years of people leadership experience managing people leaders.
• 10+ years of experience in transportation and logistics operations.
• Experience managing complex customer accounts in 3PL and 4PL environments.
• Advanced working knowledge of Tableau or similar data visualization platforms.
• Deep understanding of P&L statements, operational metrics, and financial performance management.
• Experience leading cross-functional operational improvement initiatives.
