Field Technician I - Norfolk, VA (Fiber Optics)

Location: Norfolk, Virginia, USA; onsite. 24x7 rotational on-call, standby, dispatch, overtime, and occasional after-hours work are required.

Base salary: $45,021–$60,027 annually in Virginia.

What you will do

• Perform customer and network installations, repairs, service activations, provisioning, testing, and maintenance.
• Maintain fiber optic transmission, multiplexing, switching, AC/DC power, HVAC, and other critical infrastructure equipment.
• Troubleshoot network equipment, replace defective modules, track spares, and escalate complex technical issues.
• Monitor routes and assist with service restoration during interruptions while proactively addressing potential network problems.
• Complete preventive maintenance, inspections, installation records, trouble-ticket logs, status reports, and customer communications.
• Participate in team operations, continuous improvement, and required 24x7 rotational on-call coverage.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or up to 2 years of relevant experience including at least 1 year in network monitoring, installation, maintenance, or repair.
• Entry-level technician knowledge or experience in at least one discipline: transmission such as DS1/DS3/SONET, switching such as circuit switching/SS7, TCP/IP and higher-layer protocols, or outside plant including fiber locating, OTDR, and mass fusion splicing.
• Knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, rights-of-way, and as-built documentation.
• PC skills and proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, with the ability to learn corporate databases quickly.
• Valid driver’s license; ability to maintain site security and cleanliness.
• Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 lbs.; and work in all weather conditions.
• Must be available for 24x7 rotational on-call, standby, call-out, dispatch, and business-required overtime.
