Expert Senior Manager, AI Engineering

Location: Berlin or Munich, Germany, or Zurich, Switzerland. At least three days per week must be spent working in person at a client location or Bain home office; travel beyond the primary working location is required.

What you will do

• Design, build, deploy, and scale end-to-end generative AI systems, production applications, and multi-agent workflows.
• Architect RAG, fine-tuning, embedding, hybrid retrieval, reasoning, tool-use, memory, and orchestration pipelines.
• Lead research, experimentation, evaluation design, production deployment, monitoring, and continual optimization.
• Oversee APIs, microservices, CI/CD, observability, cloud-native deployment, and GenAIOps processes.
• Build safety and evaluation capabilities covering guardrails, red-teaming, human-in-the-loop workflows, hallucination, relevance, latency, throughput, and cost.
• Advise executives and clients on AI strategy and architecture, collaborate across product, engineering, data science, ethics, and infrastructure, and mentor technical teams.

Requirements

• 8–12+ years of software engineering, ML engineering, or applied AI experience with significant hands-on building responsibilities.
• German proficiency at C1 level or higher.
• Experience leading complex, multi-stack generative AI programs from conception through production.
• Strong executive communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts for business stakeholders.
• Experience leading engineering teams, mentoring technical talent, and collaborating with diverse cross-functional groups.
• Advanced prompt engineering, context engineering, and conversation design skills.
• Expertise in evaluation design, experimentation frameworks, data labeling strategies, and LLM application evaluation.
• Deep experience with advanced RAG, agentic architectures, ReAct, RLAIF, HITL feedback loops, orchestration frameworks, vector and graph databases, and model/API ecosystems.
• Strong system design, architecture, production deployment, cost optimization, and computational tradeoff experience for LLM workloads.
• Ability to operate in high-ambiguity environments and lead, mentor, and inspire technical teams.

• Experience in client-facing consulting or enterprise transformation environments.
