Test Engineer I - RF/EMC

Location: Tysons, Virginia, United States; hybrid work with four days per week in the office and work in the Device Engineering lab.

Base salary: $77,700–$95,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Perform RF performance and EMC pre-compliance testing for cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sub-GHz radios; document and analyze results against product specifications and test plans.
• Run Z-Wave and Matter certification suites, record results, and escalate failures with logs and reproduction steps.
• Prepare, flash, configure, ship, and track test samples through external RF and EMC certification laboratories.
• Maintain certification records, forms, portal submissions, lab equipment, calibration schedules, inventory, and lab documentation.
• Rework PCBAs and prepare hardware samples for testing.
• Script repeatable measurements and log collection in Python or Bash, using AI tools to accelerate scripting, data processing, and documentation.

Requirements

• Rigorous attention to detail, exact adherence to test plans, complete documentation, and accurate recording of deviations and results.
• Reliable follow-through, early communication of progress, blockers, and questions, and sound escalation judgment.
• Curiosity about how radios, hardware, and software work together and willingness to learn through review and mentorship.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• 0–2 years of professional experience; internships, co-ops, research, capstone projects, and personal projects in RF, embedded, or test work count.
• Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, DC power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, and signal generators.
• Ability to read electronic schematics, solder, rework PCBAs, and build cable harnesses.
• Comfort with a Linux command line, including SSH or serial access to devices, firmware flashing, and log collection.
• Clear written and verbal communication and effective team collaboration.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sub-GHz wireless protocols and networking basics.
• Experience with Z-Wave, Matter, Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth LE, or conformance and interoperability certification programs.
• Familiarity with FCC, ISED, or CE/RED regulatory certification processes and preparing devices for external laboratories.
• Python or Bash scripting for laboratory tests and data processing, including AI-assisted tools.
• Experience with Raspberry Pi or other single-board computers, packet-capture tools, or protocol sniffers.
• Knowledge of antenna impedance matching for single-band antennas, calibration processes, and laboratory inventory practices.
