TL;DR
Instrumentation & Controls Design Engineer (PLC/HMI): Designing instrumentation, control, electrical, and mechanical systems for industrial, nuclear, and process applications with an accent on PLC programming, HMI development, motion control, and rigorous engineering documentation. Focus on integrating control systems, developing schematics and functional logic, delivering hardware from prototype through production, and troubleshooting complex equipment under nuclear and industrial quality requirements.

Location: On-site in Huntsville, Alabama, United States. Daily availability may include evenings and weekends when necessary.

Company

hirify.global, part of Teledyne Technologies, develops high-reliability technologies for aerospace, defense, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, electronics, oceanographic research, medical imaging, and other advanced technology markets.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, modify, integrate, and analyze instrumentation and control, electrical, mechanical, motion-control, and plant computer systems.
  • Program PLCs and develop HMIs using Rockwell Automation RSLogix/Studio 5000; work with control logic, wiring diagrams, schematics, block diagrams, and control narratives.
  • Prepare design and procurement specifications, design-basis and system-description documents, proposals, scopes of work, estimates, trade studies, white papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Develop test strategies, devices, systems, plans, and procedures; analyze equipment, conduct experimental tests, and evaluate results.
  • Use engineering and design tools such as AutoCAD, SMAP 3D, SolidWorks, Visio, and MATLAB; support architecture, prototyping, production release, technical reviews, and peer reviews.
  • Troubleshoot existing products, perform failure analysis, communicate project status, and provide technical leadership to lower-level engineers when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering, or a related field, plus 2–4 years of directly related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and principles, with the ability to design and engineer instrumentation and control and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with PLC programming and HMI design and development using Rockwell Automation RSLogix/Studio 5000.
  • Ability to design and engineer systems and equipment requiring motion control and perform control-system integration with Adams Hexagon using MATLAB.
  • Ability to conceptualize complex electrical designs for nuclear and non-nuclear projects during the bid phase.
  • Ability to prepare detailed engineering and design documents meeting NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, or equivalent requirements.
  • Strong technical writing, oral communication, coordination, collaboration, and MS Office skills.
  • Ability to follow import/export requirements and work with applicable facility personnel.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to attain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • Basic knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and relevant design, analysis, or ERP software.

Nice to have

  • Commercial, Department of Energy, or nuclear industry experience.
  • Experience with Siemens or Honeywell control systems; Siemens SIMATIC Step 7 experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Electrical Analysis packages such as ETAP or SKM for load-flow, short-circuit, harmonic, motor-starting, arc-flash, protection, and coordination studies.
  • Experience with the nuclear-qualified version of ETAP.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, UL 508A, EMI MIL standards, ISA, NUREGs, IEEE grounding standards, IEEE color books, IEC, and DOE electrical standards.
  • Certified UL-508A Manufacturer Technical Representative qualification.
  • NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam completion and willingness to acquire a PE license.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative, team-oriented engineering environment with cross-disciplinary coordination.
  • Work is performed on-site and may require evening or weekend availability to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Work follows applicable quality, safety, regulatory, import/export, and ethical requirements.
