Principal Engineer, Generator Modeling (Renewable Energy)

Location: Remote within the United States; listed locations include Louisville, CO, New York, NY, Arlington, VA, and Salt Lake City, UT.

Salary: $145,000–$181,050 per year, plus annual bonus.

What you will do

• Prepare, review, and submit generator models for renewable resources across interconnection requests, construction, as-built submissions, ISO requirements, and NERC requirements.
• Oversee consultant work involving PSLF, PSSE, PSCAD, and Aspen plant models.
• Coordinate modeling work among internal and external resources and lead engineers in delivering projects and improving workflows.
• Guide model builds, data gathering, verifications, analysis, ride-through testing, reactive power compliance, and model validation field tests.
• Coordinate responses to Transmission Planner and Planning Coordinator requests and implement generator model upgrades.
• Train engineers and ensure compliance with MOD-026-2, MOD-032, and PRC-029 technical standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
• At least 8 years of generation modeling experience, including 8–10+ years with PSSE and/or PSLF.
• At least 1 year of experience with electromagnetic transient models in PSCAD.
• Experience with interconnection study models and interconnection request packages in WECC, HECO, and ERCOT.
• Experience with Aspen for short-circuit studies and knowledge of steady-state, dynamics, short-circuit data requirements, and reporting procedures.
• In-depth knowledge of model validation, including ride-through tests, stability tests, and model verifications.
• Understanding of renewable generation modeling, inverter-based technology operations, inverter settings, plant controller behavior, and generator properties.
• Ability to read substation and power plant controller schematics, assess model values, gather data from manufacturers, contractors, and consultants, and develop formal documentation, technical reports, and presentations.
• Leadership, project management, training, mentoring, communication, organization, prioritization, independent judgment, and complex problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work remotely and independently away from an office environment or direct supervision for extended periods.
