Senior .NET Developer (Live Services)

What you will do

• Maintain, improve, and modernise national digital services, public-facing applications, shared APIs, data services, Azure Functions, shared libraries, and Orchard Core CMS components.
• Investigate and resolve live-service incidents using logs, telemetry, code, and data; restore service safely, identify root causes, and deliver lasting fixes.
• Take work from requirements clarification and estimation through implementation, testing, deployment, release, and operational handover.
• Support controlled releases across development, SIT, pre-production, and production, including deployment checks, rollback preparation, and post-release validation.
• Perform .NET and Orchard Core upgrades, dependency and security remediation, monitoring improvements, environment alignment, and service decommissioning.
• Review code, improve automated tests, collaborate with QA, coach colleagues, document investigations and runbooks, and contribute to agile planning and retrospectives.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience with C#, ASP.NET Core, and API development, including maintainable design, dependency injection, asynchronous processing, logging, exception handling, and shared package dependencies.
• Hands-on experience developing and supporting Azure-hosted applications and Azure Functions, including application configuration, service integrations, and diagnosis across distributed components.
• Experience supporting business-critical production services using Application Insights or equivalent telemetry to trace failures, investigate performance, and distinguish code, configuration, integration, and data issues.
• Experience designing, consuming, and troubleshooting HTTP APIs, including contracts, validation, error handling, compatibility, data imports, consistency issues, and downstream dependencies.
• Practical database querying and data investigation experience with relational or document databases, plus understanding of caching, invalidation, data lifecycle, and production-data risks.
• Confidence with Git branching, merging, pull requests, release and hotfix management, GitFlow or an equivalent controlled strategy, and Azure DevOps or comparable CI/CD tooling.
• Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests, supporting regression and API testing, and working with testers on meaningful evidence, deployment verification, rollback, and controlled change.
• Experience applying secure coding principles, protecting secrets, using environment-specific configuration, fixing vulnerable dependencies, and building monitorable, diagnosable, supportable changes.
• Ability to understand unfamiliar services, analyse change impact, upgrade runtimes and dependencies, and deliver incremental improvements without disrupting live operations.

Nice to have

• Experience with Cosmos DB, SQL and stored procedures, Azure Search and indexing, Redis, API Management, Event Grid, Key Vault, managed identities, and event-driven or scheduled data processing.
• Experience with Orchard Core or another .NET CMS, GraphQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GOV.UK Frontend, accessible user journeys, and content publishing workflows.
• Experience with infrastructure as code such as ARM templates, environment and configuration drift analysis, BDD or browser test automation, performance testing support, and Power BI or data reporting integrations.
• Experience delivering UK government digital services, using GDS ways of working, ServiceNow or equivalent incident tooling, and collaborating across client and supplier teams.
