What you will do

• Define and own test strategies for services built with Java Spring Boot, AWS Serverless, Lambda, Node.js, Ruby on Rails, React, and legacy mainframe systems.
• Lead, mentor, and coach testers across one or more multidisciplinary teams.
• Plan and coordinate functional, integration, regression, performance, accessibility, and security testing across the delivery lifecycle.
• Establish quality metrics, reporting, and dashboards, and communicate risk to delivery and government stakeholders.
• Embed shift-left testing into design, refinement, and CI/CD pipelines while owning test environments, test data, and integration testing.
• Lead defect triage, root cause analysis, quality improvements, release planning, go/no-go decisions, and operational acceptance for live services.

Requirements

• Strong experience leading testing across complex, multi-team digital programmes and defining strategies across microservice, serverless, web, mainframe, and monolithic systems.
• Experience designing, delivering, and overseeing test management plans in complex environments with different products and services.
• Hands-on experience with API, UI, and service-layer automation frameworks, including examples such as RestAssured, Postman/Newman, Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, JUnit, or Jest.
• Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or GitLab CI.
• Strong understanding of non-functional testing, including performance, resilience, and security testing, plus accessibility testing against WCAG 2.2 and assistive technology validation.
• Experience with test management and defect tracking tools such as Jira, Zephyr, TestRail, or Azure DevOps.
• Experience leading testers in Agile or hybrid delivery models, including Scrum or Kanban.
• Experience in regulated, security-conscious, or high-assurance environments and in UK public-sector or government testing.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate quality risk to senior stakeholders; familiarity with GDS service standards, the Technology Code of Practice, and the GOV.UK Design System.

Nice to have

• Experience testing mainframe integrations or coordinating testing across legacy modernisation programmes.
• Experience supporting services through GDS Alpha, Beta, and Live assessments.
• ISTQB Advanced, ISTQB Test Manager, or equivalent professional certification.
• Experience with contract testing such as Pact and chaos or resilience testing tooling.
• Experience building or scaling testing communities of practice.
