Backend Application Engineer (Platform Engineering)

Location: 100% remote within the Continental United States.

Salary: $120K–$175K per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate internal platform services and shared infrastructure used by hundreds of engineers, with a focus on developer experience and operational ergonomics.
• Architect high-throughput, latency-sensitive backend platforms, including request routing, traffic management, caching, rate limiting, and request-shaping layers.
• Build durable, replayable event-processing pipelines and asynchronous job execution platforms using platform abstractions, SDKs, and paved-road libraries.
• Drive multi-region, fault-tolerant, geo-distributed designs with strong availability, durability, graceful degradation, and backward-compatibility guarantees.
• Establish observability, SLOs, capacity planning, incident response, post-mortems, technical documentation, and operational runbooks.
• Partner with infrastructure, security, and SRE teams; lead architectural discussions, mentor engineers, and evaluate platform technologies for strategic adoption.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Six or more years of professional backend or platform engineering experience.
• Demonstrated experience building and operating internal platforms or shared services consumed by multiple engineering teams.
• Strong hands-on expertise designing distributed systems with attention to consistency, availability, latency, and failure modes.
• Advanced proficiency in at least one major backend language: Java, Go, Scala, Rust, or modern C++.
• Deep understanding of high-throughput messaging, streaming, and event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka, Pulsar, or NATS.
• Strong working knowledge of relational, key-value, document, and search data-storage systems.
• Experience leading multi-quarter platform initiatives across teams, including stakeholder management and technical decision-making.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical design documentation and clear presentation of trade-offs.
• Ability to mentor engineers and shape engineering culture through code review, design review, and onboarding.

Nice to have

• Experience operating Kubernetes-based platforms or contributing to internal developer-platform initiatives at scale.
• Contributions to widely used open-source platform or infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with control-plane/data-plane patterns, service mesh internals, or workflow-orchestration engines.
• Experience designing platform APIs with backward-compatibility and versioning guarantees.
• Public technical writing, conference talks, or community contributions on platform engineering.
