Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Manchester, United Kingdom; office attendance 1–2 days per week. Candidates outside Manchester should be willing to relocate.

hirify.global is building an AI operating system for pharmacy that connects pharmacies, health systems, and insurers to streamline specialty-pharmacy care coordination.

What you will do

• Design and build backend systems connecting pharmacies, health systems, and insurers.
• Solve distributed-systems problems involving event-driven workflows, retries, idempotency, data consistency, and failure recovery.
• Own substantial features from initial problem definition through architecture, implementation, deployment, and production operation.
• Make pragmatic technical decisions as the product and engineering organization scale.
• Build AI-powered capabilities into a live product where reliability and correctness are critical.
• Work with product and engineering leadership on the roadmap, architecture, and future product direction.

Requirements

• Strong engineering judgement: ability to clarify ambiguous problems, make sensible trade-offs, and deliver independently.
• Strong backend depth, including experience building and operating production systems.
• Experience with distributed systems, databases, performance, observability, and failure recovery.
• Ownership beyond implementation, including understanding production behavior, customer usage, failure modes, and the consequences of technical decisions.
• Experience taking meaningful projects from idea to reality and explaining the decisions and trade-offs made.
• Strong engineering fundamentals, first-principles reasoning, and ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly.
• Curiosity about AI through building AI products, using AI to improve work, or actively exploring AI capabilities.

Nice to have

• A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
• Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, or GCP is useful, but prior knowledge of this stack is not required.
