Staff Backend Software Engineer (Go)

Location: Remote; candidates must be in the United States or Canada

Base compensation in the United States: USD 174,500–209,000, plus equity, bonus if applicable, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical distributed telemetry systems running on Kubernetes across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
• Deliver features from initial idea through production operations and iterate using customer feedback and data.
• Own system reliability, performance, availability, and operational improvements at large scale.
• Contribute to open-source projects, write and review pull requests and design documents, and collaborate on technical decisions.
• Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and own the services being operated.
• Support teammates and deepen understanding of Grafana Cloud, its customers, and a large distributed-system codebase.

Requirements

• Motivation, self-direction, bias toward action, customer focus, pragmatism, and the ability to break complex challenges into modular solutions with short feedback loops.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills in a fully remote team.
• Solid experience with at least one programming language; Go is used, while Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar experience is transferable.
• Some experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and ideation through shipping to customers in a self-driven manner.
• Some experience developing cloud software or working in systems engineering.
• Some experience with on-call responsibilities and the DevOps model.
• Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
• Familiarity with observability systems and using metrics, logs, and traces to debug problems.

Nice to have

• Experience working with Kubernetes.
• Experience with queue systems such as the Kafka protocol.
• Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call work or hobby and homelab projects.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code.
