Manager, Software Development (AI)

Location: Ottawa, Canada; fully remote work environment

Salary: $145,000–$165,000 CAD annually

What you will do

• Lead, develop, and support a team of software developers while setting goals, expectations, and technical direction.
• Define architecture for crawling, collection, and mention-matching systems and build scalable, reliable, cost-effective services.
• Lead development of Java RESTful services using technologies such as Solr, Kafka, and Zookeeper for high-availability production environments.
• Partner with Product Owners and cross-functional stakeholders to translate client needs and business priorities into a technical roadmap.
• Establish evaluation strategies for AI agents and introduce tools and AI techniques that improve team productivity and efficiency.
• Oversee incident response, on-call processes, root-cause analysis, design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on problem solving.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience, including work with web crawling, data ingestion, or large-scale data pipelines.
• 2+ years of experience managing or leading a team of software developers.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong technical background in Java or similar type-safe languages.
• Experience designing distributed systems, including message queues or streaming platforms such as Kafka.
• Experience with APIs and third-party data providers.
• Familiarity with search technologies such as Elasticsearch or Solr and with Boolean query logic.
• Experience working in an Agile environment with JIRA and Confluence.
• Excellent communication skills for explaining technical topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders; data-driven decision-making and people leadership focused on delivery, growth, and team well-being.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure; Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD practices.
• Experience with NLP, LLMs, entity recognition, or sentiment analysis.
• Experience in PR software, media monitoring, social listening, or the Newswire industry.
