Manager, Software Development (Content Integration & Data Pipelines)

Location: Ottawa, Canada; fully remote work environment

Salary: $145,000–$165,000 CAD annually

What you will do

• Lead, develop, and support a team of software developers while setting goals, expectations, and technical direction.
• Define architecture for crawling, content collection, and mention-matching systems covering news, social media, forums, blogs, reviews, video, and podcasts.
• Partner with Product Owners and cross-functional stakeholders to translate client needs into a technical roadmap.
• Ensure scalable, reliable, cost-effective systems and monitor source coverage, mention accuracy, latency, uptime, and data quality.
• Oversee incident response, on-call processes, root-cause analysis, design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on problem solving.
• Improve coverage and relevance through new tools, AI techniques, data providers, and relationships with third-party vendors and platform API partners.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience, including web crawling, data ingestion, or large-scale data pipelines.
• 2+ years of experience managing or leading a team of software developers.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong technical background in Java or similar type-safe languages.
• Experience designing distributed systems, including message queues or streaming platforms such as Kafka.
• Experience with social media platform APIs, third-party data providers, search technologies such as Elasticsearch or Solr, Boolean query logic, and Agile environments using JIRA and Confluence.
• Solid understanding of the legal and ethical considerations of web and social data collection.
• Excellent communication skills for explaining technical topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders; data-driven decision-making; and leadership focused on delivery, team growth, and well-being.

Nice to have

• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure; Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD practices.
• Experience with NLP, LLMs, entity recognition, or sentiment analysis.
• Experience in PR software, media monitoring, social listening, or the newswire industry.
