Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Hybrid; remote work in US timezones, with locations in NYC and SF.

What you will do

• Lead a pod of 6–10 engineers through weekly 1:1s, career development, performance management, and difficult people decisions.
• Stay hands-on by reviewing pull requests, shipping code, and debugging production systems.
• Turn roadmap initiatives into scoped work, maintain low cycle time, and ensure shipped work solves customer problems.
• Own quality and reliability, including review standards, testing, incidents, postmortems, and on-call.
• Run the hiring process, conduct interviews, raise the engineering bar, and close candidates.
• Develop scalable AI-native engineering practices covering review load, agent-written code, evaluations, and quality checks; partner with product, design, and the Chief Architect.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing engineers.
• Previous experience as a strong senior individual contributor, with the ability to contribute deeply to design reviews and incidents.
• Experience growing a startup team, including hiring, setting standards, and making performance-related decisions.
• Daily use of AI coding agents and a concrete approach to managing review overload and AI-generated low-quality code.
• Fluency in Python or TypeScript and familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
• Direct communication style, including giving difficult feedback early and constructively.
• Genuine interest in people management as the primary responsibility.

Nice to have

• Experience as an early engineer at a startup that grew from seed through Series B or beyond.
• Experience building security, identity, infrastructure, or developer-tool products.
• Experience shipping products to enterprise buyers with strict security and compliance requirements.
• Hands-on experience with MCP, agent frameworks, or LLM-backed products.
• For the Platform role: experience carrying a pager and leading incident response for a production platform.
