Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid — Eagan, Minnesota, United States; other locations include Frisco, Texas, United States and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Work from anywhere is available for up to 8 weeks per year.

Base compensation: $102,200–$189,800 USD for eligible US locations; $111,400–$161,400 CAD for Ontario, Canada. The role may also be eligible for an annual bonus.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate Content Tools, APIs, and retrieval components that provide governed access to proprietary legal content across international jurisdictions.
• Build versioned, schema-driven, contract-based APIs and predictable interfaces for AI agents and consuming teams.
• Design agentic retrieval components within latency and token-efficiency budgets, and improve relevance and ranking on the Vespa search platform with TR Labs research scientists.
• Define acceptance criteria, evaluation datasets, gold data, and CI gates for verified spec-driven development.
• Own production operations, including on-call response, incident investigation, post-mortems, runbooks, structured logging, metrics, tracing, and SLO monitoring.
• Provide technical direction, document architectural decisions, collaborate with engineering and product teams, mentor junior engineers, and champion ethical AI and secure engineering.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience designing, developing, and testing production backend, API, or data-infrastructure systems, with end-to-end ownership of features and components.
• Mastery of Python, strong API design fundamentals, and rigorous unit, integration, and evaluation testing practices.
• Solid knowledge of distributed systems, including failure modes of services, queues, and datastores.
• Proficiency with AWS cloud services, Datadog, and CI/CD practices including Blue/Green and Canary deployments.
• Experience with on-call participation, architectural documentation, decision records, post-mortems, and operational ownership.
• Fluency with AI-assisted development tools as a primary workflow, using AI to write the majority of code while owning the outcome.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences through design and component documentation.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of information retrieval fundamentals, including precision/recall trade-offs, hybrid search, and ranking.
• Experience building tools or APIs for agentic AI systems, including MCP or similar protocols.
• Background in legal technology, knowledge management, or other high-stakes information domains requiring source attribution, accuracy, and entitlement.
• Experience with Vespa, OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch, including queries, index design, or cluster operations.
• Experience integrating embedding APIs, re-ranking models, or RAG-supported retrieval with production error handling and fallback strategies.
• Familiarity with API gateways such as Apigee, secure content APIs, API versioning, deterministic evaluation suites, gold data, prompt-injection red-teaming, and LLM workflow tracing.
• Working knowledge of Terraform, ECS or Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipeline configuration and optimization.
