TL;DR
Senior Equipment Engineer - Mechanical (L-PBF): Owning the reliability, troubleshooting, commissioning, and continuous improvement of production laser powder bed fusion equipment with an accent on mechanical systems, fleet performance, and cross-functional engineering. Focus on resolving ambiguous equipment failures through root cause investigations, connecting machine and printed-part data, and driving corrective actions across production assets.

Location: Long Beach or Torrance, California, United States; onsite role. Ability to lawfully access information and technology subject to US export controls is required.

Salary: $111,300–$176,720 USD annually, depending on level: Engineer II / E04 $111,300–$153,040; Sr. Engineer / E05 $128,520–$176,720; Staff Engineer / E06 $148,430–$204,090.

Company

Divergent develops integrated engineering and manufacturing systems for automotive, aerospace, and defense customers.

What you will do

  • Own technical issues, projects, sustaining performance, and reliability for assigned production L-PBF equipment.
  • Support Service and Operations by improving work instructions, providing technical support, strengthening preventive maintenance, and mentoring technicians and operators.
  • Troubleshoot motion, recoating, build platform, alignment, gas flow and filtration, cooling, thermal management, and powder-handling systems.
  • Analyze machine process and printed-part data, identify fleet trends, prioritize reliability work, and drive cost reduction through equipment optimization.
  • Lead RCCAs from issue identification and containment through long-term corrective action, including cross-functional investigations.
  • Support change and configuration management, installation, commissioning, FAT/SAT, qualification, production readiness, quality compliance, DFM, and DFR activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments.
  • Experience owning the sustaining performance of production equipment and supporting equipment through launch or ramp.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills on production equipment, including motion, fluid, gas, or thermal systems, plus sufficient working knowledge of electrical and controls systems to troubleshoot alongside specialists.
  • Ability to lead structured root cause investigations using RCCA, 5 Whys, Fishbone, Fault Tree, or similar methods and verify corrective actions.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, including finding problems in large datasets rather than only responding to reported failures.
  • Ability to influence engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and service teams without direct authority and communicate with people at different technical levels.
  • Experience mentoring or training engineers or technicians.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion or other metal additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with L-PBF mechanical subsystems, including recoating, powder handling, precision motion and alignment, inert gas flow and filtration, chillers, thermal management, vacuum, or pressure systems.
  • Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, CAD such as SolidWorks, mechanical drawings, and P&IDs.
  • Experience with fleet-level reliability, trending, or performance programs such as OEE, MTBF/MTTR, or failure-mode tracking.
  • Experience writing or standardizing work instructions for Service or Operations teams.
  • Experience with configuration management or engineering change processes.
  • Experience with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics using SQL, Python, or similar tools.
  • Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment installation, commissioning, or factory expansion.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems.

Culture & Benefits

  • Competitive salary with equity plan and discretionary results-based incentive bonus opportunities.
  • Paid vacation, sick time, company holidays, year-end shutdown, and paid parental leave.
  • HMO and Premium PPO health plans, company-sponsored life insurance, and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Learning and development reimbursement opportunities.
  • Collaborative, dynamic, high-performing environment focused on manufacturing innovation and reducing environmental footprint.
