Software Developer, DevEx (Stateful Systems)

Location: Remote across Canada, the UK, or North Macedonia; physical office in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

What you will do

• Build internal tooling, services, and APIs for safely provisioning, changing, migrating, and troubleshooting databases, topics, and caches.
• Automate upgrades, migrations, access requests, backups, and restores to replace manual operational work.
• Operate and harden production data stores, participate in on-call rotation, and contribute to incident response and blameless postmortems.
• Partner with product engineering teams on schema design, migrations, query performance, and ORM usage.
• Manage infrastructure as code with Terraform, improve GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines, and strengthen observability with instrumentation and actionable alerts.
• Use generative AI to build and maintain internal and agentic services while promoting reliability, safe change, security, and platform adoption.

Requirements

• Production backend engineering experience in a general-purpose language such as Python, Go, or Java, including building services and APIs, testing shipped software, and participating in code review.
• Production experience with relational databases from the application side, including schema design, migrations on busy databases, ORM-to-query-plan investigation, and index optimization.
• Understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals, including retries, idempotency, consistency trade-offs, and failure modes.
• Solid AWS experience, including IAM, RDS, and networking basics, plus infrastructure management with Terraform.
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD delivery pipelines, ideally with GitHub Actions.
• Operational excellence experience, including instrumentation, actionable alerts, production on-call work, incident response, and blameless postmortems.
• Experience building internal tools for engineers, such as CLIs, APIs, and automation, with a focus on reusable systems and adoption.

Nice to have

• Experience with GitHub Actions, if not already covered through required CI/CD experience.
• Experience with the listed data-infrastructure technologies, including PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, Kafka, Debezium, Apache Iceberg, S3, Glue, Athena, EMR, Airflow, dbt, Datadog, and generative AI tools such as Claude Code and AI agents.
