TL;DR
Technical Program Manager, Pretraining Data (AI): Driving large-scale data programs that support AI model pretraining and major data and model releases with an accent on cross-functional execution, data readiness, and legal and compliance considerations. Focus on coordinating interdependent workstreams, managing technical dependencies and risks, and translating complex research and engineering discussions into clear decisions and execution plans.

Location: Mountain View, California, United States

Salary: USD $119,800–$234,700 per year across the U.S.; USD $160,200–$261,000 per year in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.

Company

Microsoft AI builds frontier AI models and products spanning pretraining, post-training, evaluation, and launch.

What you will do

  • Own end-to-end program execution across multiple parallel data workstreams, tracking decisions, dependencies, and action items through closure while identifying and escalating risks.
  • Drive readiness for major data and model releases by coordinating quality checks, approvals, and sign-offs across research, engineering, and other contributing teams.
  • Build stakeholder relationships, understand technical dependencies, and translate discussions into clear decisions, owners, and execution plans.
  • Communicate program status, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Build and improve operational structures, tracking mechanisms, processes, and reviews for ambiguous technical programs.
  • Partner effectively on data usage and licensing compliance and incorporate competitive and broader AI industry context into planning and risk assessment.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of technical program or product management experience in a fast-paced technical organization.
  • Successful experience managing multiple complex, interdependent workstreams simultaneously.
  • Strong technical fluency and the ability to engage with engineers and researchers on data pipelines, systems, or infrastructure topics without needing to be an expert practitioner.
  • A pragmatic, bias-for-action approach to problem-solving, including unblocking progress without perfect information or fully defined processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including synthesizing complex, distributed information into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Ability to build trust and influence outcomes across teams without direct authority.
  • Experience operating autonomously in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Cross-functional collaboration with research, product, engineering, legal, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Centralized Technical Program Management team embedded with the stakeholders it supports.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and additional compensation.
  • Equal opportunity employment and reasonable accommodations during the application process.

Hiring process

  • The position remains open for a minimum of five days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
