TL;DR
Associate Scientist - Targeted Protein Degradation and Fetal Hemoglobin Induction (Targeted Protein Degradation/Cell Biology): Developing and evaluating PROTACs and molecular glue degraders to induce fetal hemoglobin for sickle cell disease, with an accent on erythroid biology, chemical biology, and translational therapeutics. Focus on designing complex experiments, characterizing degrader mechanisms and selectivity, and advancing candidate compounds through cellular assays and sickle cell disease mouse models.

Location: Memphis, TN, United States of America; onsite research role

Salary: $65,520–$114,400 per year

Company

hirify.global conducts biomedical research and develops therapeutic strategies for serious diseases, including sickle cell disease.

What you will do

  • Design, perform, optimize, troubleshoot, and analyze experiments evaluating targeted protein degradation strategies for fetal hemoglobin induction.
  • Characterize the activity, selectivity, and mechanisms of action of PROTACs and molecular glue degraders targeting negative regulators of fetal hemoglobin expression.
  • Evaluate compounds in immortalized erythroid cell lines, primary human erythroblast cultures, and biochemical and cellular assays.
  • Contribute to preclinical evaluation in sickle cell disease mouse models and support translational drug discovery.
  • Develop laboratory techniques and protocols, prepare scientific manuscripts, posters, presentations, SOPs, and reports, and communicate findings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary researchers, train less-experienced personnel, and support laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, inventory, and supplies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific area.
  • At least 7 years of research experience; at least 5 years with a Master’s degree or at least 2 years with a PhD.
  • Strong experimental background in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, or cellular assays.
  • Experience with immunoblotting, flow cytometry, gene expression analysis, and protein characterization.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, execute, troubleshoot, and analyze experiments.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and scientific problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Experience leading and supporting research experiments, with proven performance in an earlier or comparable role.

Nice to have

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, or a related field.
  • Experience with high-throughput experimentation.
  • Experience in erythroid biology, hemoglobin regulation, hematopoiesis, or sickle cell disease research.
  • Familiarity with targeted protein degradation technologies, including PROTACs, molecular glues, E3 ubiquitin ligases, and the ubiquitin-proteasome system.
  • Experience with primary human erythroid or hematopoietic cell cultures.
  • Experience with preclinical mouse models or translational drug discovery research.
  • Experience leading laboratory and scientific project coordination, maintenance, and research support activities.
  • Experience guiding and training other laboratory personnel.
  • Strong experimental skills, scientific curiosity, communication skills, team spirit, and willingness to learn new techniques.

Culture & Benefits

  • Highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment with Senior Scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and cross-functional scientific collaborators.
  • Opportunities to work across erythroid biology, chemical biology, protein degradation, mechanistic studies, compound optimization, and preclinical development.
  • Opportunity to contribute to therapeutic discovery with potential clinical impact for patients with sickle cell disease.
  • Benefits are available through hirify.global.

Hiring process

  • Recruiting decisions involve human review and engagement; technology may support portions of the process.
