Program Reserving Actuary (P&C)

Location: Hybrid in San Jose, California; Austin, Texas; Dallas, Texas; or Morristown, New Jersey. Open to candidates willing to relocate to one of the hub locations; relocation assistance is available.

Base pay: $115,000–$155,000 annually for the San Francisco Bay Area and New Jersey.

What you will do

• Perform quarterly reserve reviews across program tiers, including casualty special programs; evaluate reserve adequacy, roll forward LDFs, ELRs, benchmarks, and method weights, and prepare documented recommendations.
• Investigate reserve movements, claims trends, anomalies, and data quality issues, communicating findings to actuarial leadership and cross-functional partners.
• Analyze claims, premium, exposure, financial, and reinsurance data; reconcile datasets and standardize program definitions, including claim dictionaries.
• Support monthly close, large-loss thresholds and strategy, loss estimates, IBNR allocation, loss-ratio reviews, financial reporting, and reserve-risk calculations.
• Maintain Schedule P, ULAE/AO, and reinsurance treaty workbooks; support reserve committee materials, audits, SOX documentation, and signing-actuary requests.
• Improve reserving governance, automation, workflow consistency, and models through building, refitting, or calibration.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field.
• ACAS credential with robust casualty reserving experience.
• At least 4 years of actuarial experience with broad reserving exposure across multiple lines and sound judgment on limited or unstructured data.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python for independently sourcing, validating, reconciling, and analyzing large datasets, plus strong Excel skills.
• Experience with cloud data warehouses and curated analytical datasets.
• Ability to trace results from underlying claim and financial transactions through reserve exhibits and final reporting.
• Good understanding of US GAAP and US STAT accounting standards.
• Ability to explain actuarial concepts clearly to actuarial and non-actuarial audiences, including senior leadership.
• Project management skills, ability to deliver under tight timelines, collaboration, and commitment to continuous learning.

Nice to have

• Progress toward FCAS.
• Experience with BigQuery, GitHub, and layered data architectures such as bronze, silver, and gold.
• Prior program, fronting, or reinsurance experience.
• Experience with SQL-based data transformation tools such as dbt.
• Experience with SOX controls or audit support for reserving processes.
• Experience using AI tools to accelerate actuarial and data work.
