Principal Backend Software Engineer (TypeScript, Node.js, Distributed Systems)

Location: Fully remote; requires substantial working-hour overlap with Pacific Time (PT).

What you will do

• Own complex backend features from technical exploration through production delivery.
• Build and maintain TypeScript and Node.js services supporting a high-volume SaaS platform for sports technology and youth sports management.
• Design and evolve services for video and content delivery, e-commerce, monetization, scheduling, and team management.
• Navigate unfamiliar codebases, identify dependencies, understand complex business logic, and deliver solutions with minimal oversight.
• Use Claude Code and agentic engineering workflows to accelerate development, testing, refactoring, debugging, and technical discovery.
• Collaborate with product, backend, frontend, mobile, and platform engineering teams to turn ambiguous requirements into pragmatic solutions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of production software engineering experience building and operating complex software systems.
• 4+ years of hands-on experience building backend microservices and REST APIs with TypeScript and Node.js.
• Strong experience designing distributed, idempotent, and event-driven systems and resilient asynchronous workflows.
• Hands-on experience with Express.js, including separating routing and framework concerns from core domain and business logic.
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, API design, reliability, transaction consistency, and asynchronous processing.
• Demonstrated experience using Claude Code or comparable AI-assisted or agentic development tools in day-to-day software engineering.
• Ability to work independently in unfamiliar codebases, identify dependencies, understand complex business logic, and move solutions forward with minimal oversight.
• Strong product thinking, including clarifying questions, understanding user and business value, evaluating trade-offs, and recommending pragmatic technical solutions.
• Experience designing stable, contract-driven APIs consumed by web and/or native mobile applications; familiarity with AWS, Terraform, Infrastructure as Code, and modern DevOps practices; working knowledge of React; strong communication skills; and experience working in distributed engineering teams.
• Ability to maintain substantial working-hour overlap with Pacific Time (PT).

Nice to have

• Experience designing backend services consumed by native iOS/Swift and Android/Kotlin applications.
• Experience with high-volume media processing, content delivery, e-commerce, payments, or monetization systems.
• Experience modernizing or decomposing legacy monolithic applications into service-based architectures.
• Deep experience with message-driven architectures, queues, event processing, and distributed transaction patterns.
• Experience reviewing production telemetry and diagnosing performance or reliability issues in high-throughput systems.
• Experience using AI-assisted development for codebase exploration, refactoring, test generation, debugging, and technical discovery.
• Experience working on high-scale SaaS or consumer-facing platforms.
