Senior Manager, Collaboration Capabilities (AI)

Location: Hybrid; based at HHMI Headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with in-person work three days per week. Primary work address: 4000 Jones Bridge Road, Chevy Chase, MD 20815.

Hiring pay range: $171,694.40–$214,618.00 annually.

What you will do

• Lead developers and analysts in designing, building, testing, deploying, and maintaining secure web applications and workflow automations.
• Set standards for source control, code review, CI/CD, automated testing, security review, architecture, and technical quality.
• Assess custom applications and determine whether to re-platform, replace, or retire them during the move away from the Microsoft 365 tenant; maintain inventories of applications, integrations, and vendor products.
• Introduce AI-assisted development with tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, defining practices for reviewing, testing, and securing AI-generated code and identifying opportunities for agents, retrieval, and automation.
• Prioritize and forecast requests, translate business needs into requirements, and provide technical ownership for partners, vendors, implementations, and renewals.
• Hire, coach, assign work to, evaluate, and upskill the team across Google’s platform, modern web development, and AI-assisted practices.

Requirements

• Eight or more years of professional software development experience, including building web applications and workflow automation for business users.
• Three or more years leading a development team, including hiring, coaching, and handling difficult performance conversations.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Experience with a migration, large modernization, or comparable platform transition, with the ability to maintain service continuity during the transition.
• Ability to evaluate when to build, buy, or retire solutions and when enterprise platforms or AI capabilities should replace custom code.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools with a team and a clear approach to reviewing and testing their output.
• Knowledge of modern web development, including React or a similar framework, TypeScript or JavaScript, and Python; relational and cloud data stores; GitHub workflows; CI/CD; SSO, OAuth, and role-based access.
• Strongest required platform experience is with AWS, Google Workspace including Apps Script and Workspace APIs, or Google Cloud serverless services.
• Ability to explain technical trade-offs to senior leaders and frontline colleagues, convert ambiguous business needs into clear requirements, manage competing priorities, and maintain a customer-focused service standard.

Nice to have

• Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, Power Platform, SharePoint, or Dataverse.
• Experience running agile development processes across several teams or partners.
• Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
