Director of Risk & Controls (Financial Services)

Location: Fully remote within the United States; candidates must be based in and authorized to work in the United States and may work from any U.S. time zone.

Salary: Total compensation of $150,000–$225,000 per year, including base salary and target bonus.

What you will do

• Establish and own Bankrate's first-line enterprise risk and controls function, beginning with Mortgages.
• Lead monthly Risk & Compliance Committee and bi-weekly risk and compliance governance, including agendas, follow-ups, and executive accountability.
• Coordinate quarterly risk assessments and manage cross-functional mitigation roadmaps, governance projects, documentation, and historical archives.
• Use AI to design risk workflows, monitor and test compliance, and build employee compliance training such as Fair Lending content.
• Manage third-party due diligence, internal policy creation and validation, and Bankrate's adherence to approximately 60 internal policies.
• Coordinate with Procurement, Security, Data Privacy, Legal, Compliance, and IT Security, and manage certifications including SOC, EcoVadis, ISO, and WCAG.

Requirements

• 10+ years of progressive risk, compliance, or control management experience.
• Financial services experience is required; consumer home loans or mortgage experience is strongly preferred.
• Proven ability to project-manage complex, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to completion through influential communication.
• Proven experience using AI as a productivity tool, including building agentic workflows for repetitive, multi-step responsibilities.
• Working knowledge of first-line and second-line risk frameworks, such as the three lines of defense, and comfort operating as the first line.
• Ability to build processes, cadences, and documentation from scratch.
• Exceptional organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage dozens of open workstreams and communicate progress clearly to executives.
• High energy, low ego, and genuine enthusiasm for an undefined, still-being-built function.
• Prior people management is not required; a strong individual-contributor track record is acceptable.
