Principal DevOps Engineer (AWS/Kubernetes)

Location: Remote in the Eastern Time zone; Boston, MA preferred. Salary and benefits are specified for US-based employees.

Salary: $126,000–$180,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for a bonus or commission plan and equity grant.

What you will do

• Own and document platform architecture across AWS, with growing infrastructure footprints in GCP and Azure.
• Set SLOs for core platform services, own availability, lead major-incident response, and deliver post-mortem follow-ups.
• Operate EKS clusters at scale, including capacity planning, node and pod density, graceful shutdown, and developer access models.
• Build and maintain reusable Terraform modules for RDS, S3, and IAM, while retiring legacy infrastructure repositories and accounts.
• Operate and improve the internal AI gateway using LiteLLM and Langfuse, including model onboarding, cost reporting, guardrails, and model-request policies.
• Maintain parity between US and EU environments, design observability pipelines, enforce resource hygiene, mentor engineers, and develop self-service tooling and prototypes.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps roles, including at least 3 years at staff or principal level setting technical direction.
• Deep AWS expertise with EKS, RDS, S3, and IAM, plus working knowledge of GCP or Azure.
• Strong Terraform skills and experience building modules adopted by other teams.
• Production Kubernetes experience, including Helm, GitOps workflows, and cluster lifecycle management.
• Experience owning uptime for production systems, including on-call responsibility and incident command.
• Judgement and maturity to evaluate AI opportunities, convert them into capabilities, monitor results, and mature AI usage.
• Clear written communication and the ability to write architecture proposals understandable to both VPs and junior engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-region deployments or EU data residency requirements.
• Familiarity with Crossplane, kgateway, or similar platform-engineering tools.
• Experience building internal developer platforms or CLIs.
