Software Engineer, Payments

Location: US remote eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required.

Base pay: $162,000–$186,000 USD per year, with possible bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

What you will do

• Build and operate distributed backend services and APIs for policy, coverage, enrollment, and regional rules.
• Translate product and regulatory requirements into tested code and configurable platform behavior.
• Implement experimentation hooks, events, logging, and metrics for offer testing and attach-rate measurement.
• Build data pipelines and collaborate with Product, Design, Data Science, Legal, infrastructure, security, privacy, and engineering teams.
• Use data to identify conversion and reliability gaps and drive improvements.
• Participate in technical design, code reviews, on-call rotations, monitoring, alerting, and operational reliability work.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on backend services.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language: Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go.
• Experience building and operating services and APIs, with working knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed systems and service-oriented architecture in production.
• Familiarity with A/B testing or experimentation systems and using data for product decisions.
• Experience in insurance, payments, fintech, or other regulated domains.
• Experience with multi-region or configurable, rules-driven platforms.
• Ability to work through ambiguity and collaborate deeply with cross-functional teams.
• Strong communication skills for explaining technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences.
