Software/Electrical Engineer (PLC/IPC)

Location: Richmond, Virginia, US; onsite role with international travel as needed.

What you will do

• Design, develop, modify, test, document, and support PLC and IPC software for tobacco industry machines.
• Create and maintain parts lists, BOMs, functional descriptions, change logs, revision records, technical references, and electronic drawings.
• Perform SAP-related engineering documentation tasks and manage engineering data.
• Troubleshoot software, controls, and machine functionality issues; research obsolete components and recommend replacement or design options.
• Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, service, and other engineering disciplines while managing multiple projects.
• Provide technical direction to a small team when required and travel internationally for projects, installations, commissioning, troubleshooting, training, and customer requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field is preferred; equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.
• At least five years of experience in an engineering or industrial automation environment and five years as a Software Technician or in a comparable technical software/controls role.
• Thorough hands-on knowledge of PLC and IPC programming, troubleshooting, testing, and documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, machine documentation, functional descriptions, and technical specifications.
• Working knowledge of BOM structures, parts lists, revision control, engineering change documentation, and SAP or similar enterprise systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to research technical issues, evaluate options, and recommend practical solutions for machinery and controls concerns.
• Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, attention-to-detail, independent-working, and multi-project management skills.
• Ability to provide technical guidance, collaborate with teams, follow applicable electrical codes and machine safety practices, and support safety, quality, continuous improvement, and ongoing technical development.

Nice to have

• Associate degree in a related technical field.
