Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote in the United States; optional collaborative workspaces are available in Austin, Atlanta, and London.

Salary: $186,000–$280,000 annual base salary; variable compensation, equity, and benefits may also apply according to local policies.

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, and evolution of scalable, reliable, high-performance distributed systems.
• Drive cross-domain architectural discussions and contribute to the long-term technical roadmap.
• Integrate machine learning models and GenAI solutions into existing and future products, evaluating relevant AI infrastructure and development practices.
• Build secure, maintainable, testable software; lead code reviews; and address performance, scalability, and reliability issues.
• Build tools and frameworks that enable faster and safer delivery by other engineers.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship while collaborating with engineers, product managers, designers, and stakeholders across global teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering production systems, including demonstrated leadership in technical direction and architecture; a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is required, or equivalent practical experience.
• Expertise in backend development with at least two server-side languages, such as PHP, Go, Scala, Java, Python, or Ruby.
• Proven experience architecting, building, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems, with strong knowledge of consensus, consistency, and fault tolerance.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or similar cloud platforms and microservices architecture.
• Solid experience with SQL, in-memory storage, and other data storage solutions.
• Experience operating and monitoring production services, including observability tools such as Sentry, Kibana, or Datadog.
• Strong understanding of software design principles, testing strategies, and modern development practices.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, communication, technical leadership, and mentorship skills; ability to explain design decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, drive clarity across complex initiatives, and promote learning, teaching, and engineering excellence.

Nice to have

• Experience building product solutions with LLMs and GenAI technologies.
• Familiarity with vector databases, model orchestration tools, inference frameworks, and cloud-native machine-learning workflows.
• Experience with SaaS or multi-tenant platforms operating at significant scale.
