Senior Software Engineer - Storefront Services Team (GraphQL/AI)

National base salary: $116,000.00–$195,000.00 per year

What you will do

• Build and maintain features for the service powering every BigCommerce storefront, shaping requirements and technical designs with product managers and partner teams.
• Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while maintaining schema guidelines, backward compatibility, and support for headless storefronts and third-party integrations.
• Evolve the storefront service for AI-driven shopping, enabling agents and shopping assistants to browse, build carts, and complete checkout.
• Investigate production issues and improve service performance and reliability using metrics, traces, and logs.
• Review code from contributing engineering teams and develop design skills through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building backend services running in production.
• Preferred minimum Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, computer engineering, or management information systems, or equivalent experience.
• Production experience with Scala or Kotlin is preferred; backend experience with languages such as Java or Go is accepted for candidates willing to learn Scala.
• Experience translating requirements into technical designs with product managers or other stakeholders and delivering those designs to production.
• Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals, including caching headers, cookies, sessions, and timeouts.
• Familiarity with GraphQL APIs; service-to-service communication and caching technologies such as gRPC and Redis.
• Experience debugging production issues with metrics, traces, and logs using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or Sentry.
• Familiarity with feature flags and gradual rollouts for safely releasing changes.
• Experience writing automated tests and working with CI/CD pipelines.
• Regular use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or Cursor, with careful review of AI-generated code.
• Interest in how AI agents use APIs, including MCP and tool calling.
