Principal Information Technology Infrastructure Engineer (Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure)

Location: Rockville, Maryland, United States. Hybrid workplace with regular onsite work in a traditional office and data center environment; some remote flexibility and occasional off-hours or on-call support may be required.

Annual base salary: $131,600–$205,625, with potential discretionary or non-discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Own the architecture, design, hands-on engineering, and operation of enterprise virtualization across VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter and Nutanix AOS/AHV, including compute, storage, and networking.
• Lead the VMware-to-Nutanix migration, including workload assessment, dependency mapping, target architecture, migration planning, VM conversion, and post-migration validation.
• Design, build, and support containerization and orchestration platforms including Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS ECS, integrating them with virtualization and cloud infrastructure.
• Deploy and support Windows and Linux servers, storage integrations, identity and access services, directory services, SSO, certificates, backup, disaster recovery, and PKI/TLS.
• Develop architecture documentation, procedures, capacity plans, runbooks, automation, and infrastructure-as-code using PowerCLI, Python, Bash, Ansible, and Terraform.
• Lead technology evaluations and vendor discussions, resolve complex cross-layer escalations, collaborate with network, security, storage, application, and IT leadership teams, and mentor infrastructure engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least 8 years of hands-on experience engineering and administering enterprise virtualization and/or containerization platforms at a senior or principal technical level.
• Expert-level production experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
• Hands-on production experience with containerization and orchestration platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes, or AWS ECS.
• Experience architecting and supporting hybrid infrastructure across on-premises data centers and AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Expert-level VMware knowledge, including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and underlying compute, storage, and networking concepts.
• Strong working knowledge of Nutanix AOS, AHV, and Prism, including cluster administration, storage, and migration tooling, or comparable HCI experience with the ability to develop deep Nutanix expertise.
• Experience with enterprise storage, SAN/NAS, Windows and Linux servers, Active Directory, ADFS, IDAM/SSO, DNS, DHCP, PKI/TLS, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, business continuity, networking, and infrastructure automation.
• Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, documentation, communication, independent working, collaboration, mentoring, and stakeholder communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with Nutanix AOS/AHV/Prism or direct leadership of a VMware-to-Nutanix or similar HCI migration.
• Experience with Pure Storage.
• Knowledge of VMware NSX.
• Relevant certifications such as VCP/VCAP, Nutanix NCP/NCA, CKA, or AWS/Azure/GCP certifications.
