Mechanical Engineering Design Lead (HVAC)

Location: New York, United States; hybrid work indicated by #LI-Hybrid. The role is anchored in the New York/MTA market and may expand to major transit programs in other U.S. regions.

Base compensation: $200,000–$260,000 annually.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design for HVAC and supporting building systems serving transit stations, tunnels, and rail facilities.
• Provide technical authority for elevators, vertical transportation, and station accessibility systems.
• Manage design packages from concept through final design, including drawings, specifications, engineering reports, calculations, airflow modeling, system sizing, and performance-based design.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA, ASHRAE, NYC Building Code, and transit authority requirements.
• Coordinate with architects, structural, electrical, fire/life safety, and systems teams to deliver integrated solutions.
• Provide project management leadership, support schedules and budgets, interface with clients, mentor staff, and participate in design reviews and QA/QC.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. A Master’s degree is preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally in rail, transit, or complex facility environments.
• Deep HVAC design expertise for underground or enclosed infrastructure.
• Experience supporting or leading elevator and vertical transportation design for station and facility projects.
• Strong knowledge of engineering standards, life safety requirements, and transit agency design criteria.
• Ability to lead technical teams and manage design deliverables on major capital infrastructure programs.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence working directly with the MTA, WMATA, or similar major transit agencies.
