TL;DR
Staff Embedded Firmware Engineer (Automotive): Building the real-time embedded software stack for next-generation software-defined vehicles with an accent on BSPs, peripheral drivers, RTOS architecture, deterministic communication, and functional safety. Focus on leading silicon bring-up, analyzing timing and concurrency issues, enforcing MISRA and ISO 26262 practices, and coordinating hardware-software interface development.

Location: Sunnyvale, United States; hardware bring-up is performed in Sunnyvale labs.

Salary: $210,000–$320,000 annually.

Company

hirify.global is a mobility AI company and the Global Software Center of Hyundai Motor Group, developing software-defined vehicle technologies and autonomous urban transportation systems.

What you will do

  • Drive the architecture, implementation, and evolution of BSPs, hardware abstraction layers, peripheral drivers, and communication stacks for GPIO, ADC, PWM, timers, CAN-FD, Ethernet/TSN, SPI, and I2C.
  • Architect and optimize FreeRTOS, SafeRTOS, and AUTOSAR OS environments, including task partitioning, scheduling, IPC, memory isolation, and deterministic execution across multi-core systems.
  • Lead silicon and prototype-board bring-up, system characterization, interrupt-latency analysis, execution profiling, and power and resource budgeting.
  • Investigate hardware-software interaction bugs, timing issues, and race conditions using JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and bus analyzers.
  • Define hardware-software interface specifications and bring-up tooling requirements with hardware design, systems engineering, and V&V teams.
  • Establish firmware engineering standards, review practices, static-analysis workflows, and mentor senior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of hands-on embedded software engineering experience delivering production-grade firmware for safety-critical or resource-constrained platforms in automotive, aerospace, medical devices, industrial robotics, or consumer electronics.
  • Expert proficiency in embedded C and modern embedded C++, including memory models, low-level concurrency, compiler optimization behavior, and deterministic execution.
  • Production experience architecting, tuning, and debugging multi-threaded software on commercial or open-source RTOS platforms, including formal timing analysis and synchronization primitives.
  • Extensive experience with Coverity, Polyspace, QAC, Cppcheck, or comparable enterprise static-analysis tools, including rulesets, complex findings, and defensible suppressions.
  • Strong understanding of ARM Cortex-M/R, TriCore, or similar MCU/SoC architectures, register-level programming, memory-mapped I/O, and CAN-FD, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.
  • Demonstrated success leading board bring-up in a hardware lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and bus analyzers.
  • Practical experience delivering software under ISO 26262, IEC 62304, DO-178C, or another regulated safety framework with strict requirements traceability.
  • Proficiency with Git, Bazel or modern build systems, and automated CI/CD pipelines for firmware build verification and automated testing.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with ISO 14229 (UDS), SOME/IP, DoIP, or automotive Ethernet stacks.
  • Experience with multi-core microcontroller architectures, Hardware Security Modules, or secure boot.
  • Experience designing and validating protocol state machines, serialization layers, and fault-recovery logic.
  • Experience applying structured OOP patterns, clean interface abstractions, and data encapsulation in embedded C++.
  • Proficiency in Python for bring-up tooling, HIL automation, or custom build and test scripts.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on safety-first, user-centric software-defined vehicle technologies for Hyundai Motor Group.
  • Collaborate across firmware, hardware design, systems engineering, and V&V disciplines.
  • Equal opportunity employment with consideration for veterans and qualified individuals with disabilities.
  • Resume documents must be submitted in PDF format and be under 30MB.

Hiring process

  • Application review, coding test, first interview, second interview, offer negotiation, and hiring.
  • Screening steps may vary by position, schedule, or other circumstances; candidates receive schedules and results by email.
