TL;DR
Embedded Software Engineer II (C/C++): Building safety-critical firmware for robotics devices across Zephyr, FreeRTOS, bare-metal, and Embedded Linux environments with an accent on real-time architecture, hardware integration, and deterministic performance. Focus on implementing low-level drivers, debugging with JTAG/GDB, automating hardware-in-the-loop testing, and meeting IEC 61508 safety requirements.

Location: Philadelphia, PA, United States

Base compensation: $125,000–$150,000 annually, based on experience and location.

Company

hirify.global develops safety and security solutions for autonomous and remotely operated machines, including wireless emergency stops and safe remote control systems.

What you will do

  • Design and implement robust C/C++ firmware for safety-critical embedded devices.
  • Architect RTOS-based firmware with Zephyr and FreeRTOS, including scheduling, interrupt handling, inter-task communication, memory budgeting, and deterministic timing analysis.
  • Develop low-level peripheral drivers, board support code, and bare-metal startup and silicon bring-up workflows.
  • Integrate RTOS devices with Embedded Linux applications and ensure reliable communication across platforms.
  • Maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated, on-target, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Debug and optimize hardware and firmware using JTAG, GDB, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers while supporting IEC 61508 compliance.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of hands-on embedded software development experience, including RTOS or bare-metal systems.
  • Strong C skills and working proficiency in C++.
  • Production experience with an RTOS such as Zephyr, FreeRTOS, ThreadX, or a similar platform.
  • Experience with MCU peripherals, datasheets, reference manuals, linker scripts, startup code, and embedded hardware debugging.
  • Familiarity with Embedded Linux user-space development, IP networking, and interfaces including UART, SPI, I2C, USB, and CAN.
  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience, plus Python scripting and CI/CD experience.

Nice to have

  • Zephyr devicetree, Kconfig, and west workflow experience.
  • Wireless stack experience with BLE, ISM, or Wi-Fi on constrained devices.
  • Functional safety or regulated-industry experience in medical, automotive, or aerospace environments.
  • Embedded Linux BSP and device-driver knowledge.
  • Familiarity with static analysis, MISRA C, or other safety-critical coding standards.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work focuses on safety-critical systems protecting people, data, and machines.
  • Collaboration with hardware, embedded software, and safety engineering functions.
  • Use of AI-assisted recruiting tools is disclosed; hiring decisions are made by FORT employees.
