Staff Firmware Engineer (Medical Devices)

Location: Trumbull, Connecticut, United States (on-site); primarily site-based with occasional travel for cross-functional meetings, vendor visits, training, and conferences.

Salary: $132,000–$176,000 per year.

What you will do

• Define firmware architecture, influence hardware design, and lead firmware development for complex electromechanical systems.
• Design, debug, prototype, integrate, and verify firmware and electronics for new medical device products.
• Drive Software Design Control compliance, including design inputs, technical strategies, verification, validation, and applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
• Create and execute formal firmware verification protocols and prepare verification test reports.
• Lead and mentor junior engineers, interns, and collaborators in design control processes and firmware best practices.
• Coordinate cross-functional project deliverables and manage communication with external development partners and stakeholders.

Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of closely related firmware development experience for complex electrical systems in the medical device industry.
• Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related combination of fields. Advanced degrees are strongly preferred.
• Extensive R&D experience with medical device firmware and complex electromechanical, mechatronic, robotic, or connected systems.
• Experience with medical device Design Control guidelines and FDA, MDR, ISO, CSI, and other relevant standards; ability to translate user needs into design inputs, create verification protocols, perform firmware verification testing, and publish verification reports.
• Technical leadership or program management experience, including planning and coordinating R&D, development partners, or cross-functional technical programs.
• Hands-on experience building circuits, debugging firmware, soldering, repairing, servicing, or fabricating prototypes, fixtures, and concepts.
• Proven hands-on coding experience with C/C++ and state machines, plus peripherals and buses including USB, SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO, and CAN.
• Solid understanding of analog circuits, signal conditioning, filters, digital circuit design, PID and floating-point control algorithms.
• Experience with bare-metal systems and/or embedded operating systems such as Embedded Linux or FreeRTOS; working knowledge of ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and real-time operating systems including FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
• Experience with circuit and layout tools such as Altium Schematic Capture, hardware/software integration, hardware debugging, lab instruments, and statistical methods including Design of Experiments.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, outcome-focused, process-disciplined, and project-completion skills.
