Head of Cloud Engineering

Location: Remote within the United States, with collaboration anchored around Central time.

What you will do

• Define the multi-year cloud platform strategy and architecture, primarily across AWS accounts, networking, compute, data, and disaster recovery.
• Hire, develop, and lead cloud and infrastructure engineers and managers while establishing technical ownership and operational rigor.
• Drive infrastructure as code, CI/CD, self-service tooling, and consistent platform automation using Terraform or equivalent tools.
• Partner with Security and Compliance to implement HIPAA, SOC 2, and HITRUST controls covering identity, encryption, logging, audits, and vulnerability management.
• Set reliability, observability, SLO, incident response, capacity planning, resilience, and backup/recovery standards with SRE.
• Own cloud cost visibility and optimization, and communicate infrastructure options and constraints to Product, Engineering, Security, and Finance leaders across OpenLoop and its subsidiaries.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in infrastructure, cloud, or platform engineering, including 4+ years leading engineering teams. Experience managing managers is preferred within this requirement.
• Deep hands-on experience architecting and operating production workloads in AWS.
• Strong command of infrastructure as code with Terraform, containers and orchestration with Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, and ECS, plus CI/CD.
• Proven experience improving reliability, security posture, and cloud cost efficiency at scale.
• Experience operating in regulated environments such as HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, PCI, or similar.
• Clear communication skills, with the ability to set direction, explain rationale, and influence executives and engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with GCP or Azure.
• Healthcare or health technology experience, including systems handling PHI.
• Experience leading cloud migrations, account or landing-zone redesigns, or platform consolidation after acquisitions.
• Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure, including GPU workloads, model hosting, and data pipelines.
• AWS Professional-level certification or equivalent.
