Project Engineer - Sustainability

Location: Remote, with frequent interaction with manufacturing operations and 50%–60% travel to divisional sites, supplier locations, or customer facilities. The listed location is Columbia, Maryland, United Shirify.globals.

Salary: $85,000–$115,000 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Lead sustainability-related capital and improvement projects from concept through commissioning, including scope definition, cost estimates, schedules, and ROI analysis.
• Evaluate and implement renewable energy solutions such as solar installations and energy storage systems.
• Develop water conservation, rainwater harvesting, reuse, and process water optimization initiatives.
• Reduce solid, liquid, and energy waste through process improvements, equipment upgrades, and supplier collaboration.
• Analyze facility and process energy consumption, implement energy reduction projects, and track KPIs for energy, water, waste, emissions, and financial return.
• Coordinate with operations, maintenance, EHS, finance, vendors, utilities, contractors, and regulatory agencies while supporting audits, reporting, compliance, and sustainability certifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, including Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Environmental, or a related discipline.
• 4+ years of experience managing or supporting engineering projects, preferably in manufacturing, industrial, or facilities environments.
• Working knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable energy, water management, and waste reduction.
• Strong analytical skills for evaluating technical options, lifecycle costs, and return on investment.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams and external vendors or contractors.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and drive them to completion.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Proficiency with engineering and project tools such as Excel, CAD viewers, CMMS, energy monitoring platforms, or similar tools.
• Practical, hands-on approach focused on action and measurable results; advanced leadership and management skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with solar PV systems, utility interconnections, or energy rebates and incentives.
• Familiarity with ISO 14001, ISO 50001, or corporate sustainability reporting.
• EIT or PE certification.
• Experience in capital project justification and post-implementation validation.
• Advanced strategic thinking skills.
