Translation and Interpretation Officer (Sinhala-English)

Location: Remote within EMEA; occasional in-person engagements, including meetings, workshops, field visits and stakeholder engagements in Sri Lanka.

What you will do

• Translate programme reports, training materials, presentations, guidance documents, calls for proposals, grant-related materials, social media content and other communications between English and Sinhala.
• Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during online meetings, consultations, webinars, training sessions and occasional in-person engagements.
• Review and proofread translations for grammar, clarity, consistency, terminology and alignment with the source document.
• Maintain terminology consistency and develop or update bilingual glossaries when requested.
• Prepare terminology from agendas and reference materials, coordinate with the designated Vriddhi focal point, and submit work in the requested editable format.
• Handle confidential information, incorporate feedback, correct errors promptly and meet agreed deadlines, including short deadlines where reasonably required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in translation, interpretation, languages, linguistics, communication, social sciences, law, human rights, development studies or another relevant field, with two years of relevant experience.
• At least two years of professional experience in translation and interpretation, including technical or programme-related document translation and live interpretation in online and/or in-person settings.
• Ability to translate technical and programme content accurately and communicate complex ideas in clear, natural language.
• Knowledge of terminology related to protection, human rights, civil society, inclusion, programme management and development programming.
• Strong proofreading, editing and quality-control skills, with the ability to meet agreed deadlines.
• Proficiency in Google Workspace and online meeting applications.
• Ability to provide written translation and live interpretation between English and Sinhala.

Nice to have

• Formal training or professional certification in translation or interpretation from a national body.
• Experience supporting the United Nations, international organizations, civil society organizations or donor-funded programmes.
• Experience translating or interpreting content related to grants, finance, monitoring and evaluation, training or safeguarding.
• Familiarity with the Sri Lankan civil society and development context.
