Staff Software Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Build core features for the flagship tax-filing product, simplifying complex tax scenarios into reliable customer experiences.
• Partner with product management, design, and engineering to understand customer problems, shape pragmatic solutions, and deliver measurable outcomes.
• Own work end to end, from discovery and technical design through implementation, release, monitoring, and iteration.
• Contribute to technical direction and strategy while making trade-offs between speed, quality, maintainability, and risk.
• Use AI-assisted development tools for exploration, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation, while validating AI-generated output and applying appropriate safeguards.
• Improve developer experience through tools, automation, and engineering practices that support reliable, frequent delivery, and share effective AI-assisted development practices with teammates.

Requirements

• Professional software engineering experience with React and Node.js, including designing reliable backend services and APIs.
• Ability to work across system boundaries and collaborate with engineers outside the primary area of specialization.
• Experience evaluating and troubleshooting AI-generated output, using effective prompting, and sharing practical learnings with teammates.
• Experience working with a public cloud environment such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Microsoft Azure.
• Familiarity with DevOps concepts and practices, including CI/CD, observability, and operating software in production.
• Understanding of authentication, databases, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and API integrations.
• A builder-first and pragmatic approach, with initiative to turn customer problems into shipped outcomes, test and learn quickly, and make clear trade-offs.
• Commitment to writing maintainable, elegant code and continuously improving software development practices.
• Collaborative attitude, willingness to challenge ideas constructively, and ability to work effectively when requirements and solutions are still taking shape.
