Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Distributed Systems)

Location: Fully remote and global; work from anywhere. Candidates outside the United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore may be hired through Remote.com.

Annual total target cash ranges from $143,800 to $231,900 in the United States, £90,300 to £148,500 in the United Kingdom, and S$178,600 to S$267,900 in Singapore; total target cash includes base salary and 100% variable target where applicable.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for the distributed streaming platform underlying hirify.global 8 orchestration capabilities.
• Lead medium-to-large engineering initiatives lasting roughly three months or more, from translating business problems into technical requirements through solution design, planning, and delivery.
• Improve disaster recovery and resilience through online backup and restore APIs and enhanced multi-region and multi-tenant capabilities.
• Build developer and operator tooling for understanding, troubleshooting, and safely operating distributed systems in production.
• Collaborate with Product, DevOps, QA, SRE, Support, and Core Application teams on requirements, CI, testing, local development, and engineering effectiveness.
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations to investigate complex, performance-sensitive production issues.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, focused on backend systems and/or distributed systems.
• Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives lasting roughly three months or more, including decomposing ambiguous problems, writing solution designs and project plans, coordinating multiple teams, and driving predictable delivery.
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining highly concurrent, data-intensive software, with deep knowledge of low-level network and disk I/O, including throughput, latency, backpressure, batching, and failure modes.
• Ability to work autonomously, navigate ambiguity, break unfamiliar problems into concrete steps, and drive them to completion with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment, including translating business requirements into actionable technical work with Product.

Nice to have

• Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software.
• Experience with distributed systems algorithms or protocols such as Raft, Paxos, SWIM, and/or CRDTs.
• Strong familiarity with observability pillars including logging, metrics, and tracing, ideally with L3 support and on-call experience.
• Deep knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine, including its memory model and performance characteristics in highly concurrent, data-intensive workloads.
