Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote in Mexico, Colombia, or Chile

What you will do

• Improve shared backend systems, services, libraries, APIs, and developer tooling as part of the platform team.
• Identify automation opportunities across engineering workflows and build solutions using AI agents where appropriate.
• Enable other engineering teams through documentation, guidance, code reviews, and reliable shared infrastructure interfaces.
• Own security fixes, dependency upgrades, production monitoring, debugging, performance, and service reliability.
• Diagnose bottlenecks and reason about concurrency, failure modes, scalability, and reliability across APIs and integrations.
• Share effective AI-assisted engineering patterns and help improve development practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend development with Java and experience shipping and operating production systems.
• Strong system design and backend fundamentals, including API design, integrations, concurrency, failure modes, and service reliability.
• Deep knowledge of data modeling, query design, indexing, and database performance.
• Experience diagnosing complex production issues, identifying root causes, and making safe incremental changes in an existing codebase.
• Daily production use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Augment, or equivalent, with the ability to critically review generated code.
• Clear technical communication and interest in Elixir or functional programming languages.

Nice to have

• Experience building B2B SaaS products with complex multi-tenant data models or transactional workflows.
• Platform, internal tooling, developer-enablement, security patching, or dependency-upgrade experience.
• Familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks such as Angular.
• Experience in travel, hospitality, or the experiences industry.
• Experience working on small, high-output teams and making architectural decisions independently.
