Senior Backend Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Fully remote within Canada; candidates must be located in Canada within the PST or MT timezones.

Base salary in Canada: CA$144,900–CA$189,175 per year. The role may also include benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

What you will do

• Drive large, complex projects autonomously from technical design through launch.
• Address complex architecture challenges and apply architectural standards to new projects.
• Lead code reviews and documentation, including complex bug fixes involving high-risk problems.
• Partner with engineering teams on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projects.
• Apply existing language expertise to Java development and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and developing backend applications.
• Senior-level experience with one or more prominent programming languages such as Java, Python, Kotlin, Go, or Scala.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree; a Computer Science degree is preferred.
• Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, with hands-on experience using public cloud offerings such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Fluency in at least one database technology, including RDBMS options such as Oracle or PostgreSQL and/or NoSQL options such as DynamoDB or Cassandra.
• Experience designing and implementing well-tested, highly scalable, and performant microservices and/or other distributed systems.
• Practical knowledge of agile software development methodologies such as XP or Scrum.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space, and time.
• Experience mentoring other engineers, influencing decision-makers across the organization, and considering customer impact in technical decisions.
