Software Development Engineer II - BDP (Java)

Location: Hybrid in Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom; 60% of the week is spent collaborating at office locations or local sites and the remainder remotely.

What you will do

• Develop features for a high-scale backend event-driven platform using Java and Spring Boot.
• Design, implement, test, review, and ship code with more senior engineers and colleagues.
• Build and maintain automated test suites, applications, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Use observability tools such as New Relic and Splunk to monitor live systems.
• Contribute to planning sessions, team discussions, requirements understanding, and development-practice improvements.
• Gain hands-on experience with distributed systems, large-scale data processing, performance optimisation, Kafka, Kubernetes, and distributed services.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of Java and an interest in backend development.
• Familiarity with object-oriented programming principles.
• Some practical experience building event-driven services and/or REST APIs.
• Willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment.
• Strong communication skills, including asking questions, seeking feedback, and sharing learning.

Nice to have

• Exposure to Spring Boot, NoSQL databases, or cloud services.
• Curiosity about performance, scalability, and observability in large-scale systems.
• Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and containerisation.
• Some experience working with platforms such as Kafka.
