Financial Data and Controls Lead, Billing Platform

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid, with staff expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time.

Annual salary: $345,000–$425,000 USD.

What you will do

• Own reconciliation and accuracy checks for quantities, prices, discounts, invoices, credits, and other critical billing data across product, billing, payment, app store, cloud marketplace, and internal systems.
• Design and operate detective controls, automate repeat checks with billing engineering teams, and catch errors before they reach the accounting books.
• Review financially significant billing changes for SOX and IT application control impact, ensuring functional test evidence and audit documentation are complete.
• Own end-to-end test strategy and audit evidence in partnership with Finance Systems, Data Engineering, Accounting, and Internal Audit.
• Triage billing errors, prioritize backfills and fixes, track materiality, and define data contracts between billing and finance systems.
• Lead reconciliation and controls owners across billing engineering teams through influence, translating product and pricing changes into financial impact, test strategy, and process updates.

Requirements

• Experience building or owning a financial ledger, billing reconciliation, or cash reconciliation system end to end that Accounting relied on to close the books.
• Hands-on SQL skills sufficient to match messy usage and invoice datasets, identify breaks, and explain root causes.
• Accounting knowledge covering order to cash, month-end close, and materiality, with the ability to assess the financial impact of billing changes.
• Experience working with SOX and Internal Audit teams on IT application controls, detective controls, transaction monitoring, functional test evidence, and auditor walkthroughs.
• Experience defining data contracts between billing or product systems and finance systems such as ERP, general ledger, or revenue recognition systems.
• Track record of driving work across Engineering, Finance, Accounting, and Audit without direct authority.
• Ability to explain technical issues to Finance and auditors and financial risk to engineers.
• Interest in AI and commitment to building safe, beneficial AI systems.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a relevant field demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• Backend, data, or analytics engineering background, including building a financial ledger or cash reconciliation system from scratch.
• Experience operating and scaling these systems under public company reporting requirements.
• Experience with usage-based or consumption billing and multi-party billing such as marketplaces or app stores.
• Experience converting manual checks into automated verifiers, remediating control deficiencies, or establishing controls programs while systems were changing.
• Experience using Claude or other AI tools to automate reconciliation, testing, or evidence collection with reviewable checks.
• Experience with Stripe, Metronome, Zuora, NetSuite, or Workday Financials.
• Python for data analysis or automation.
