Engineering Manager (Backend Services)

Location: Chicago, Austin, or Toronto; candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.

What you will do

• Lead the newly formed Core Services team within Development and Infrastructure Systems.
• Define and scope projects, build timelines and task breakdowns, and maintain roadmaps and schedules across diverse services.
• Manage, mentor, and support engineers through daily execution, career growth, morale, and future planning.
• Drive technical excellence with the technical lead and review engineering architectures.
• Monitor and improve engineering processes while collaborating with production, product, and customer engineering stakeholders.
• Balance live-service maintenance and support with enhancements, refactoring, and forward-looking projects.

Requirements

• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education or work experience.
• 4+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager and 4+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer.
• Ability to build and maintain roadmaps and schedules for a diverse set of services while balancing support with new projects.
• Ability to manage, mentor, and lead a distributed team of engineers.
• Ability to collaborate with engineering stakeholders including production, product, and customer engineering teams.
• Hands-on experience with low-latency systems and massive-scale backend online-services infrastructure in an AWS environment.
• Experience building backend services in modern languages such as Java or Golang, with sufficient depth to provide feedback and mentorship on microservice architecture, API design, and large-scale implementation.
• Experience with infrastructure as code and Kubernetes deployments.
• Constantly updates technical knowledge and seeks to learn new technologies.
• Excellent communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience defining and maintaining SLOs for live services.
• Experience with test-driven development and testing frameworks.
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring platforms such as Datadog.
• Experience with JavaScript frameworks for frontend and backend development.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code frameworks such as Terraform and Helm.
• Comfort with low-level investigation of infrastructure and services.
• Mobile development experience focused on iOS and/or Android.
