Software Engineer (Digital Health)

Location: Halifax, Canada; hybrid model with a couple of days on site and the remainder working from home.

What you will do

• Build and maintain production web services powering the communications platform.
• Develop capabilities for additional communication channels and consumer and provider experiences beyond email and SMS.
• Contribute to coding, system design, architectural decisions, service modernization, and technical debt reduction.
• Own work across testing, deployment, production support, and the full software lifecycle.
• Collaborate with engineers, architects, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver scalable and reliable software.
• Improve code quality, testing, automation, and shared engineering practices.

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional software development experience.
• Expert-level Java experience with a strong foundation in object-oriented design and clean code principles.
• Extensive experience with AWS services and serverless technologies, including AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and S3.
• Hands-on experience with NoSQL and relational databases such as DynamoDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design, authentication and authorization frameworks such as OAuth2 and JWT, and microservices architectures.
• Experience supporting software through testing, deployment, and production with an end-to-end delivery approach.
• Experience mentoring and supporting fellow engineers through constructive feedback and knowledge sharing.
• Experience with Docker/Kubernetes, containerized environments, message-brokering systems such as SQS or SNS, or event-driven architectures.
• Curiosity, adaptability, collaborative communication, practical judgment, end-to-end ownership, and a continuous-improvement mindset.

Nice to have

• Exposure to DevOps and software testing practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and automated testing.
• Experience with modern web development using JavaScript or TypeScript with React and/or Next.js.
