Senior Vehicle Systems Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; flexible hybrid work model with office attendance expectations tailored to role requirements. International travel of up to 25% is required.

Salary: CAD 104,400–135,700 annual base salary.

What you will do

• Lead complex vehicle investigations, reverse engineering, and root-cause analysis across vehicle electrical, hardware, and communication systems.
• Define safe and reliable requirements for interfacing with vehicle communication systems, including containment strategies to prevent data loss or adverse vehicle interactions.
• Develop test plans and validation approaches with Vehicle Integrations and cross-functional engineering teams.
• Lead resolution of high-priority vehicle data-quality issues and support the design and modification of test solutions.
• Deliver engineering requirements and documentation, contribute changes through Git commits and merge requests, and review and approve peer changes.
• Design monitors and dashboards for Feature Flag behaviour, device health, and feature effectiveness; mentor team members and improve reverse-engineering practices.

Requirements

• 5–8 years of related experience with vehicle systems, sensors, actuators, controls, diagnostics, and electrical or communications architecture, design, and operation.
• Bachelor’s degree or post-secondary degree/diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer, Systems Design, Automotive Engineering, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
• Strong knowledge of vehicle architecture, embedded systems, CAN bus communication protocols, OBD-II (J1979), J1939, KWP, and UDS.
• Experience diagnosing vehicle issues with CAN analysis software and conventional tools, including connector probing, harness building, and circuit testing.
• Understanding of automotive ECU software architectures such as AUTOSAR, particularly application-layer functional clusters.
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, including explaining complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Previous technical leadership or mentoring experience.
• Ability to learn or write SQL queries and Python scripts to analyze Google BigQuery data.
• Valid passport and driver’s licence for independent vehicle operation; willingness to travel internationally up to 25%.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with Automotive Ethernet and DoIP.
