Application Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Riederich, Germany (on-site); 10–20% travel to customer sites

What you will do

• Design and implement robotics and automation solutions for pick-and-place, machine tending, assembly, palletizing, screwing, and other customer requirements.
• Program robots and automation logic using Python, C++, PLCs, and robot-specific languages; maintain application software and scripts.
• Integrate robots with grippers, sensors, cameras, PLCs, conveyors, and other peripherals through digital I/O and industrial networks.
• Commission, test, and troubleshoot systems in the lab and at customer sites, including checking wiring, power supplies, and I/O signals.
• Support feasibility studies, proofs of concept, demonstrations, cycle-time estimates, and layout estimates.
• Write application notes, manuals, and training materials, and train customers on delivered applications.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Automation, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2–4 years of experience in application engineering, automation, or robotics.
• Solid skills in Python, C++, and/or PLC programming, including debugging and version control with Git.
• Understanding of motion basics and hands-on experience programming industrial or collaborative robots.
• Familiarity with PLCs, digital and analog I/O, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, EtherCAT, PROFINET, OPC UA, or TCP/IP.
• Basic understanding of electrical and electronic systems, including the ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Fluent English.

Nice to have

• Experience with ROS or ROS 2 and Linux-based development.
• Basic machine vision skills, including OpenCV, camera calibration, and hand-eye calibration.
• Knowledge of functional safety and standards such as ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066, and ISO 13849.
• First exposure to AI-based perception or manipulation.
