Staff Software Engineer, Privacy & Safety Regulations (PHP)

Location: Hybrid, based within commutable distance of hirify.global’s Brooklyn office; office attendance once or twice per week is expected. Remote candidates outside commuting distance may be considered case by case, with occasional travel to the office.

Salary: Geo-1: $197,000–$267,000 annual; Geo-2: $178,000–$240,000 annual.

What you will do

• Lead the technical design and scaling of marketplace-wide privacy platforms, focusing on reliability, observability, and performance.
• Build and optimize systems for consent and preference management, data access and deletion requests, data classification, and Safety by Design workflows.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Privacy Legal, Security, Trust & Safety, Marketing Technology, and other teams to translate compliance requirements into APIs, data models, and implementation plans.
• Create reusable patterns, paved paths, and documentation that make privacy-preserving development the default for engineers.
• Contribute production code, evaluate build-versus-buy decisions, conduct architecture and code reviews, and mitigate architectural risks.
• Monitor privacy metrics, participate in support rotations, automate operational work, and mentor engineers while driving execution across teams.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, or Staff-level equivalent experience leading architecture and delivery for complex, ambiguous systems.
• Strong hands-on expertise building reliable backend platforms, APIs, and distributed systems within large codebases.
• Proficiency in at least one production language, such as PHP, Python, Java, or Go, with a focus on clean, testable, and maintainable software.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally GCP, CI/CD, service observability, and production incident response.
• Ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs clearly and build cross-functional alignment across Product, Legal, Compliance, Security, Risk, and Engineering.
• Collaborative ability to translate policy requirements into scalable engineering controls.
• Foundational knowledge of security and/or privacy, including privacy by design, data minimization, access controls, data pipelines, metadata systems, PII discovery, classification, and lineage.
• Architecture, platform thinking, systems judgment, and the ability to translate broad requirements into practical, durable engineering solutions.

Nice to have

• Background in security engineering, privacy engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Legal or regulatory experience.
